Phoenixville VegFest 2017

Hi everyone! Today was Phoenixville's 2nd VegFest; I volunteered during the first shift, mostly helping vendors to unload and set up canopies before the event began. Then at noon I met Zach and my sister Alena; after we got our free bags from the Peace Advocacy Network table, we'd planned to get in line for Vegan Treats, but the line was so long that we decided to do lunch first. I ordered a mac & cheese from Soy Cafe, which ended up taking a while (they said they were heating it up), which I didn't mind waiting for but then it was still cold when I finally got it. It tasted good, but yeah, could have been better...

Alena got the BBQ seitan sandwich, which seemed like the better choice overall, haha...

Then we got in line for Vegan Treats, which was a long, long wait. I got an autumn old-fashioned glazed donut and the brownie chunk cheesecake...

Our last purchases of the day were t-shirts from Grape Cat...

Tomorrow's the first day of Vegan MoFo, so I'll be back soon!

Here are all four kitties from tonight... (Leela was hunkered down under the bed and refused to come out for a better picture, haha!)

September MiniMofo: Bananana Dakry

Hi everyone! September’s MiniMoFo asks us to make something inspired by a book, so I chose Terry Pratchett’s Witches Abroad (of his Discworld books, the ones with the witches are my favorites; this one I especially loved for all the letters Nanny Ogg wrote home while they were away). In the middle of the book, Nanny procures drinks for herself and the two other witches…

“‘I said to the man, “What kind of fruit drinks do people drink around here?” and this is what he gave me. Made from bananas. A banana drink. You’ll like it. It’s what everyone drinks here. It’s got bananas in it.’
‘It’s certainly very ... strongly flavored,’ said Magrat, sipping hers cautiously. ‘Has it got sugar in it too?’
‘Very likely,’ said Nanny. She looked at Granny’s middle-distance frown for a moment, and then picked up her pencil and licked the end professionally.

Anywey one good thing is the drink here is v. cheap theres this one called a Bananana dakry which is basicly Rum with a bananana* in it. I can feel it doin me good. It is v. damp here. I hope we find somewhere to stay tonigt I expect we shal because Esme alweys falls on her feet or at any rate on someones feet. I have drawern a picture of a banananana dakry you can see it is empty right down to the bottom. Love, MUM XXXX
*Nanny Ogg knew how to start spelling ‘banana,’ but didn’t know how you stopped.” (p. 190-191)

I used this recipe, substituting the rum & triple sec with pineapple juice for a non-alcoholic version, and it was really good! Like Nanny, I made sure to draw a picture when I was done…

...which actually inspired a plan for this year’s Vegan Month of Food (be sure to sign up quickly if you want to participate; sign ups close September 22) – I’ll be following the daily prompts and including a little sharpie sketch of my food because I also want to participate in Inktober.

Here are Cringer and Daisy sharing the cat tower by the window...

Simple Stir Fry (Long Island Vegan)

Hi everyone! This week I made a stir fry with the recipe Sarah shared on Long Island Vegan. I used tempeh, mushrooms, an orange bell pepper, and some frozen peas & carrots. The stir fry came together really well and was delicious served over white rice! The leftovers were really good, too!

I caught Leela mid-meow; she looks like such a little goof…

Apple Cider Popsicles (House Vegan)

Hi everyone! I’d been hoping to make at least one more batch of popsicles before fall, and I found the perfect recipe over at House Vegan! These apple cider popsicles were easy to make, and didn’t require a blender, which was nice (less to clean up afterwards, haha!). I had one today, and it was really good! I don’t think I’ve ever had an apple-flavored popsicle before, so this was new but definitely fun and seemed perfect for this time of year, with fall right around the corner...

Potatoes, Garden Veggies, and Some Treats

Hi everyone! This week I had lots of potato meals and finished up my garden carrots…

I also tried to embrace the cooler weather with some mashed potatoes and lightly-steamed green beans, which were a gift from another neighbor…

Zach and I finally found some Miyoko’s VeganMozz, so last night, we gave it a try on pizza bagels! When I first pulled them out of the oven, it didn’t look like the cheese had melted at all, but pressing down lightly with a fork spread the cheese out nicely. And of course, it was delicious!

Oh, and I can’t forget to share the goodies I got from Vegan Treats at Bethlehem VegFest last week! The lemon blueberry cheesecake was absolutely amazing, and I warmed up the sticky bun and had it for breakfast the next day; yum!

Here’s a sleepy Cringer, photo by Zach...
