Bookmarked Recipe: Chow Mein (Your Mom’s A Vegan)

Hi everyone! Today I made the chow mein from Your Mom’s A Vegan (Vegan MoFo 2013); it turned out great, especially the sauce, which was really delicious!


(When I make this again, though, I’ll leave out the bamboo shoots; I always pick them out of my vegetable fried rice when my family orders Chinese food, but I considered that they might cook differently in this recipe, so I decided to give them another chance. Well, I still ended up picking out all but the smallest pieces, haha!)

  1. Getting to leave out what you don't care for is the best part of cooking for yourself! (I'm not a fan of bamboo shoots, either.)

    1. That is definitely true! And yeah, now that I've tried cooking them myself and still don't like them, I'm just going to avoid them from now on, haha! :)

  2. I love bamboo shoots, but I am not a fan of water chestnuts. I normally leave them out, and rely on celery for some crunch.

    1. Oddly enough I kinda like water chestnuts now; I didn't use to, but the crunch has grown on me. Leaving out the water chestnuts would definitely work, though, especially since there's already celery in the recipe! :)

  4. Oooh that chow main looks delicious. I'm with Susan as well, I'm ok with the bamboo shoots but the water chestnuts are so gross to me. I think it's the texture.

  5. I think I like bamboo shoots in Chinese takeaway food, but I've never used them in a recipe. I'm more ambivalent about the celery, haha, but your version does look good! And this sounds like a recipe that's easy to tweak to your own liking. :)

    1. Thanks, Bonnie! This is definitely a recipe that you can easily modify to suit your preferences; I know I'll be making it again with some variations to the veggies! :)
